In the spring of 2001 a group of students formed a Youth as Resources board with the help of the Initiative Foundation and the Staples Community Foundation. Pam Collins joined in on the project as adult coordinator.
In December, 2002, the Stomping Gounds Coffee Shop received a $16,000 GirlsBEST grant from the Women's Foundation of Minnesota. GirlsBEST (Girls Building Economic Success Together) is a five-year grant making and public awareness initiative of the Women's Foundation of Minnesota. The project also received funding from the Initiative Foundation, the Blandin Foundation, Lutheran Brotherhood, and private donations.
The coffeeshop provides an intergenerational crossroads that emphasizes youth involvement in business activities, the creation of a safe, chemical-free and tolerant social space, community involvement and activism. Events are held at the coffeeshop to bring together the community and provide youth with activities and programs that are fun, social and educational.
The original mission of the Stomping Grounds was to be a youth run, non-profit coffee shop dedicated to teaching youth volunteers about running a business.
and for our 3rd year anniversary,
we expanded indoors and outdoors . . .
